Is Your Battery Fully Juiced?
Avoid the sinking feeling of hearing nothing when you hit the ignition with a proactive check of your battery and charging system now. Repair shops don't usually charge very much to load-test your battery, and some car-parts stores will do it for free.
If you find out your battery's going south, you can replace it at your convenience, instead of being at the mercy of whomever your dead car's been towed to.

KBB.com: Best Redesigned Car is 2013 Ford Fusion
"More than a handful of vehicles made the short list of finalists for this year, but ultimately the 2013 Ford Fusion was named KBB.com's 2013 Best Redesigned Vehicle with impressive gains in design, technology and fuel economy," said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book. "Outside, the new Fusion is clearly the hottest-looking car in a class with no fewer than 13 other entrants. The interior is just as striking, and a variety of technological enhancements and choice of five powertrains is just icing on the cake. Whatever mix of value, power and fuel efficiency you're looking for in a mid-size sedan, the new Fusion has it."
The Best Redesigned Vehicle accolade honors the vehicle that best demonstrates improvement and superiority relative to its predecessor and competitors. In judging, the KBB.com editors consider exterior and interior styling, technology, comfort and convenience features, performance/capability, driving dynamics, safety, fuel economy, overall refinement and, of course, value.
One way to describe the Best Redesigned Vehicle is the model that received the best complete makeover. It's the existing car, truck, minivan or SUV model whose team of designers, product planners and engineers did a superior job of transforming what once was into something much better. For 2013, the Ford Fusion excelled and rose to the top.

Guests also will find out why the Model T was so revolutionary and how Henry Ford’s visionary thinking and hard work enabled him to put the world on wheels. The role of the Model A
The Model A returning home played a pivotal role in Ford Motor Company history. In July 1903, Henry Ford faced a daunting situation: The company’s cash balance stood at less than $250. A much-needed cash infusion arrived on July 13, 1903: One full payment and two deposits totaling $1,320 for three Model A cars kept Ford Motor Company afloat. The car revealed today is a red 1903 Model A Rear Entry Tonneau. It is believed to be car No. 3, chassis No. 30, and the lone survivor of the group of three Model A cars sold on that day.
The vehicle was auctioned through RM Auctions in October in Hershey, Pa. “The Model A helped keep our company going during a difficult time and enabled my great-grandfather to continue pursuing his vision of putting the world on wheels,” said Bill Ford. “We look forward to carrying that same spirit of innovation forward as we develop new technologies for safer, cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles.”

Maintenance Tip Monday- Go easy when you’re stuck
Go easy when you’re stuck
When stuck in mud or snow, don’t make the problem worse by damaging an expensive component. Gently rocking in an attempt to free the car is fine. But if it looks as though you’re really stuck, don’t keep at it. Throwing your car from forward to reverse repeatedly, as well as spinning tires at high speeds, can generate lots of heat and spell trouble for transmissions, clutches, and differentials. It may be cheaper in the long run to call the tow truck rather than risk big repair bills down the road. It’s a good idea to carry a traction aid in the trunk, such as sand, gravel, or cat litter.

Maintenance Tip Monday- Preserve door and window seals
Preserve door and window seals:
Wipe a rubber protectant (such as Armor-All) or silicone on door and window weatherstripping to keep it in good condition. Don’t use an oilbased product, such as WD-40, because the oil will damage the rubber. Regular cleaning and treatment of your car’s weatherstripping will also lessen the likelihood of your door sticking to its rubber seal in cold weather, a common cause of damage to the rubber.

Ford Says New Carbon-Fiber Technology Could Boost Fuel Economy
- Ford on Tuesday showed off a prototype carbon-fiber hood that could be used in high-volume manufacturing of its battery-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
- The carbon-fiber hood takes Ford a step closer to making an affordable version of the material usually associated with racecars and high-end sports cars.
- Carbon fiber is one-third the weight of steel and would help Ford cut the weight of its cars by up to 749 pounds by the end of the decade, the automaker said.
Ford on Tuesday showed off a prototype carbon-fiber hood that could be used in high-volume manufacturing of its battery-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
The carbon-fiber hood takes Ford a step closer to making an affordable version of the material usually associated with racecars and high-end sports cars.
Carbon fiber is one-third the weight of steel and would help Ford cut the weight of its cars by up to 749 pounds by the end of the decade, the automaker said.
"It's no secret that reducing a vehicle's weight can deliver major benefits for fuel consumption, but a process for fast and affordable production of carbon-fiber automotive parts in large numbers has never been available," said Inga Wehmeyer, advanced materials and processes research engineer at Ford's European Research Center, in a statement. "Ford is working to develop a solution that supports cost-efficient manufacturing of carbon-fiber components."
Dow Automotive Systems and Ford are working to develop an "economical source" of automotive-grade carbon fiber, along with high-volume manufacturing methods. Ford said both are "critical to increasing the range of future Ford battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles."

How to Survive a Tire Blowout
To survive a tire blowout, pretend you're the bad guy in a police chase: Push the gas and drive straight ahead. The shotgun-blast noise of a tire blowout makes most law-abiding drivers do exactly the wrong thing: attempt to slow down quickly and get off the road. With a rear-tire failure, any turning at high speed will likely result in a crash.
I've taught hundreds of drivers how to correctly handle a tire blowout: I sat in the passenger seat and exploded a gaping hole in the tire with plastic explosive. Not one lost control. Here's how they did it.
If a tire blows:
- Squeeze the gas pedal for a couple of seconds. This puts you in control of the car and directs the car straight down the road. It also prevents you from committing the mortal sins of braking and turning. After a couple of seconds, gently and smoothly release the accelerator pedal. The drag force of a completely flat tire is so potent that pushing the gas will not allow the vehicle to go faster.
- Most importantly, drive straight down your lane. Keep your feet away from the brake (or clutch).
- Allow the car to coast down to as slow a speed as is safe (30 mph is good). Engage your turn signal and gently turn toward the shoulder of the road that's on the same side as the blown tire: This lessens your chance of losing control and will make the tire change safer. If the situation requires, you may ever so lightly squeeze the brakes.
Almost all highway blowouts and tread separations occur with the car traveling in a straight line on a very hot day at high speeds with an underinflated tire. The repeated flexing of an underinflated tire causes the failure. Check your tire pressures!

Ford to Offer Smartphone-Based In-Vehicle Navigation
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE With more and more consumers switching over to GPS-equipped smartphones, forking over a massive premium for an expensive onboard navigation system can seem a bit unnecessary.
On the other hand, having a navigation system built into a car makes things a little bit easier than using your smartphone while driving. Hoping to address these two issues, Ford has announced a new, affordable way to get convenient, turn-by-turn vehicle navigation into your car.
Last week, Ford's navigation provider TeleNav announced a new Android-friendly edition of its Scout navigation app.
Now, if you have a Ford vehicle equipped with the AppLink system, the Scout app will automatically connect to the vehicle, turning the dash into a scaled-down version of an onboard navigation system. The current update only works for Android phones on the Verizon, AT&T and Sprint networks, but TeleNav says T-Mobile support will be available shortly.
Of course, you won't be getting all of the perks of a standard onboard navigation system, but the AppLink screen will be able to provide basic route instructions and even give you voice commands. This could also be a good thing, seeing as how you won't have any big interactive maps to distract your eyes from the road. The Scout app will also synchronize with the AppLink's voice command system, allowing you to easily access preset destinations from your phone or search online for points of interest using your smartphone's data connection.
Unfortunately, you'll have to sign up for a $25 annual subscription fee to use the Scout's Car Connect feature. Another option is to pay $5 each month with the month-by-month model. But either way, it's a whole lot cheaper than upgrading to a factory installed onboard navigation system.

Changing Windshield Wipers
Wiper Tales
Here's a news flash: It's much easier to avoid hitting things you can see. Simple as it is, that's the concept behind replacing your windshield wipers before they fossilize into noisy uselessness.
Fall is the ideal wiper replacement time: after the blade-baking summer and before the fall and winter nastiness. Depending on location, wiper replacement may be an annual affair in the Southwest to a biannual chore in northern climes.

Ford Fusion Certified As America’s Most Fuel-Efficient Midsize Sedan
The all-new Ford Fusion is the most fuel-efficient midsize sedan in America with an EPA-certified 47 mpg city, 47 mpg highway and 47 mpg combined fuel economy rating for its hybrid model.
- 1.6-liter EcoBoost: 25 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, 29 mpg combined
- 2.0-liter EcoBoost: 22 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, 26 mpg combined
- 2.5-liter: 22 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, 26 mpg combined
- Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid: Projected 100-plus MPGe (miles-per-gallon equivalent)
- Lane-Keeping System: Using a small, forward-facing camera behind the inside rearview mirror, this system “looks” down the road, monitoring lane lines to determine that the car is on course. The system will alert a driver if drowsiness or erratic lane-keeping is detected. The second element warns a driver with a steering wheel vibration if the Fusion drifts too close to lane markings. Finally, Lane-Keeping Aid will actually apply pressure on the steering to help bring the car back into proper lane position
- Adaptive cruise control: Using forward-looking radar, this system “looks” down the road when activated, slowing the Fusion when slower traffic is detected ahead. The system can help slow the car if the potential of a crash is detected
- Active park assist: Employing sensors, this technology identifies a suitable parallel parking space, calculates the trajectory, and steers the car to properly position it within the spot. Drivers operate accelerator and brake pedals
- BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert: Sensors in both Fusion rear quarter-panels are able to detect traffic in a driver’s blind spot, providing both audible and visual warnings if traffic is detected. BLIS technology enables cross-traffic alert, warning the driver of oncoming traffic when backing out of a parking space with obstructed views, such as between two large vehicles

Survey Says: American Drivers Want Features That Help Make Them More Aware; New Ford Fusion up to the Challenge
Even under ideal daytime conditions on a dry road, traffic can suddenly slow or someone can slip into the gap between you and the car ahead. When the sun goes down or the clouds open up, it gets harder to judge what a suitable following distance might be. Nearly nine out of 10 of the survey respondents expressed interest in technology that could assist in slowing their car if it determines there is a potential collision ahead.

Be patient during the break-in period
You’ve bought your dream car and now you want to make it last at long as possible in top condition. Here are some things to remember as you pull it out of the dealer’s lot:
- During the break-in period, typically the first 1,000 miles (1,600 km), keep your speed under 55 mph (88 kpm) or to the speed recommended by your car’s manufacturer.
- Avoid heavy loads on the drive train, such as towing trailers, and loading the roof rack or trunk with heavy construction materials.
- Do not allow your new car to idle for long periods — this is good advice for the life of your car, but especially during breakin. The oil pressure generated by doing so may not be sending oil to every part of your engine.
- Use only light to medium acceleration, keeping the engine rpms below 3,000 for the first few hours of driving.

Random Acts of Fusion is Ford's breakthrough transmedia marketing program aimed at introducing the all-new Fusion to millions before it hits showrooms this fall
What would you do if you were given $25,000 to give the people in your neighborhood an "unreal" experience? Ford is asking this very question as part of its "Random Acts of Fusion" transmedia marketing program. The week-long contest, in partnership with the Steve Harvey Morning Show, will award one person with a check for $25,000 to be used to benefit the community of their choice. The winner will also receive an all-expenses paid trip for two to the 2012 Ford Hoodie Awards taking place in Las Vegas Aug. 2-5.
"Life is all about acts - big and small - and through Random Acts of Fusion, this car and program will take real people to unexpected places," says Crystal Worthem, manager, Ford Brand Content & Alliances. "Being able to partner with the Steve Harvey Morning Show to select an individual to win $25,000 to benefit their community is yet another big way we are taking this program directly to real people. That we are able to tie this contest into an event like the Ford Hoodie Awards is perfect as this event is all about giving back and celebrating those who are doing great things within their respective communities."
Consumers can enter the contest by visiting www.RandomActsofFusion.com and submitting an entry using 500 characters or less explaining what they would do if Ford gave them $25,000 to give back to their community. The entry should describe how the contestant would use the prize money to improve their community, and/or bring a premium experience to their neighbors. A final winner will be selected July 30 and will be announced during the live broadcast of the Steve Harvey Morning Show in Las Vegas.
In addition, attendees of the 2012 Ford Hoodie Awards will have an opportunity to get a closer look at the 2013 Fusion and be entered into a raffle to win VIP access to the Ford Hoodie Awards Beach Party at Mandalay Bay Beach with performances by R&B singer Robin Thicke and Keith Sweat.
